7. PhotoScape

You can use this software as your stepping stone before using Adobe Photoshop. Simple, no layers, but brushes are available. Cheap, lightweight, and goes easy on your machine resources. PhotoScape gives you the ability to perfectly select and to move and manipulate a text object and change the font size in pictures.

The framing of text fields is a problem for many other free photo-editing software products such as Paint.net, Pixlr, Adobe Photoshop Express, GimpShop, or IrfanView. We recommend Photoscape for the professional framing and renaming of large series of photos.

Freemium product, is free to use but for additional features, they have a One time purchase (perpetual license).

Photoscape is sometimes referred to as Photoscape X.

6. MyPaint

MyPaint is an excellent application for uncompromising sketches or drawings. The infinite canvas allows you to make drawings at will, without worrying about the space available in a “virtual paper”.

If you are an artist who is used to traditional media, but you want to try digital, then MyPaint is for you. The brushes simulate traditional media very well, and the interface is clean and simple. The whole program emphasizes real media so there are no tools such as straight line, box, circle, etc. However, this is not really a drawback because if these were included, the program would become very complicated, and then you could just get Gimp or Adobe Photoshop. I would not recommend doing heavy-duty photo editing with this software, but for drawing, this program is ideal.

This is an editor designed for sketching with natural-type brushes and effects. It’s like drawing on paper with Conte or ink, or whatever brush you want. You would not find rules and guides here, but (like Paint Tool SAI) you might have a lot of fun! Ideal for drawing with a tablet and a notebook/laptop.

Really awesome for paintings or sketching/ drawing mockups. Lots of brushes and a very nice User Interface with a very flat learning curve.

1. GIMP

It is probably the closest alternative to Adobe Photoshop. GIMP has a ton of great features, this program is constantly improving and is never going to cost you money. It will just cost you a bit of your time to learn how to use it.

It runs on many platforms, offers many filters and effects, the vectorial tool is easy to use and it offers many predefined brushes to start.

Conclusion

We have chosen GIMP as our overall number 1 choice for graphic design however we found Krita to be the best alternative to Adobe Photoshop for Digital Painting. While we prefer GIMP we also found that Krita is much simpler in design and easier to use as an Adobe Photoshop Alternative.

The one(s) that as a Golden Star next to it is the Adobe Photoshop Freeware Alternative we use regularly at The Correct Choice.
